Senior Misha Chalkley Becomes First Female JU NROTC Midshipman to Earn Elite Submarine Warfare Officer Assignment  It won’t be long before senior Misha Chalkley is immersed in all things nuclear as the first female JU NROTC Midshipman to earn a highly competitive post as a U.S. Navy Submarine Warfare Officer. Of 67 NROTC units with applicants nationwide, only 14 billets were awarded to females this academic year by the U.S. Navy for the Submarine Warfare program.

Jacksonville University Announces Professor Of The Year Julie S. Brannon, Ph.D., Professor and English Chair, Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, was honored Friday, March 23, as Jacksonville University’s 2018-19 Professor of the Year. The much-anticipated award and several other honors were presented at the 60th Annual Faculty Recognition Dinner.

Eppley Foundation Awards JU Professor Funding for Plant-Based Electronics Research On June 21, The Eppley Foundation for Research awarded Jacksonville University Assistant Professor of Physics Dr. Ramesh Adhikari $24,850 in grant funding to conduct and oversee undergraduate research on the development of plant-based electronics.

Jacksonville University Alumni Programs Announces 2018 Alumni Award Honorees The Jacksonville University Office of Alumni Programs will honor recipients of the Class of 2018 JU Distinguished Alumni Awards during halftime of the Homecoming and Family Weekend football game Saturday, October 13.

From Homeless to Hero: Ninja Warrior & JU Alum, Gabe Stewart “Be positive. Be passionate. Be proud to be an Eagle.” That’s the official school motto of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where Jacksonville University alumnus Gabe Stewart (‘16) coached. JU Vice-Provost Sherri Jackson Named 2018 Woman of Influence Among healthcare leaders, lawyers, nonprofit leaders, financiers, and judges, Jacksonville University’s Dr. Sherri Jackson is the only 2018 Woman of Influence representing higher education. The 30-year Jacksonville University veteran first arrived on campus as a visiting professor. Today, she serves as JU’s recently appointed Vice-Provost.

JAGS Favorite, JAX Native, JU Legacy Alum Alexander “Alec” Hadden graduated from Jacksonville University in 2014, with his BFA in Musical Theatre. On Sept. 16, he wowed a packed stadium where more than 68,500 fans anticipated the Jacksonville Jaguars face-off with the New England Patriots in a highly-anticipated rematch.

JU Marine Science Pioneer Award Honoree, OCEARCH Founder Chris Fischer Now, in its tenth year, the world-renown ocean research organization OCEARCH has completed a cumulative 33 expeditions, collaborated with a total 174 scientists, facilitated the capture and release of more than 300 sharks, and has been the subject of countless online narratives, news columns, student journals, and magazine articles. And the chief storyteller is Founder Chris Fisher, recipient of the annual Jacksonville Unversity Marine Science Pioneer Award.

Composing the Future: Jacksonville’s Watkins-Hanson Journey Dr. Scott Watkins, Professor of Piano and coordinator of keyboard studies at Jacksonville University since 2001, researches the early life of famed American composer Howard Hanson in his spare time, focusing on the years that preceded Hanson’s directorship at the Eastman School of Music, a research journey which began with what Watkins calls an “Indiana Jones moment.”

JU Professor Co-Authors New Cost of Voting Index Recently published by The Washington Post, Politifact.com, and other national and local media outlets, Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Michael Pomante and collaborators puzzled out ease of voting from state to state.

The Undertow Provides New Outlet of Expression Today, more industries are trying to stay relevant with the youthful culture present in society. One such market where this is especially important is colleges. This is the challenge Jacksonville University’s admissions department wanted to address when “The Undertow” was conceived.
