“Street Scene: An American Opera” Today, Saturday, Sunday at JU’s Swisher Theater

“Street Scene: An American Opera” April 5-7 at Swisher Theater is a huge production, using the JU Orchestra, faculty, staff, students and the children of some of our faculty in the cast!

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning play by Elmer Rice, directed by Kimberly Beasley and under the musical direction of Marguerite Richardson, it is a show about tenement living on the Lower East Side of NYC in 1946 and incorporates themes of immigration, poverty, race, and religion.  Kurt Weill, who defected from Germany in 1933, is the composer and Langston Hughes of the Harlem Renaissance poets is the librettist.
