Ricker-Gilbert Named NCAA Legislative Committee Chair

Jacksonville University Senior Vice President and Athletic Director Alex Ricker-Gilbert was named Chair of the NCAA Division I Legislative Committee, effective July 1, 2021.

Ricker-Gilbert will provide leadership to the subcommittee of the Division I Council, whose primary responsibility is to review and make recommendations to the Council regarding the merits of proposals developed through the shared governance process (conferences and Council committees). The Legislative Committee also provides feedback to autonomy conferences regarding the impact of autonomy proposals on the entire Division I membership.

“It is an honor to be appointed as Chair of the D-I Legislative Committee,” said Ricker-Gilbert. “The group of industry professionals that comprise the committee are some of the best in the country, and I am humbled to be able to serve with them.

“We have significant, meaningful work ahead of us. I am ready and excited to continue to serve our student-athletes and member institutions as a representative of Jacksonville University and the ASUN.”

The D-I Council is the day-to-day decision-making arm of the NCAA Division I level, made up of ADs, conference commissioners, Senior Woman Administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives, other athletics administrators and student-athletes. Ricker-Gilbert is in his fifth year on the council, one of three representing the ASUN Conference.

In his role as Chair, he will provide leadership for a group that is responsible for vetting the numerous proposals for items such as rule changes and amendments and providing feedback to the council when items are up for review. It is the final appellate body for decisions made by the Legislative Review and Interpretations Committee, and the Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee, Legislative Review and Interpretations Committee and the Committee on Legislative Relief all report directly to it.

Ricker-Gilbert’s appointment as Chair is for one-year and continues the stretch of JU having a presence among the primary decision makers in Division I athletics.
