JU’s School of Education hosts literacy workshop for Big Brothers Big Sisters Sept. 26

JU’s School of Education and some of its Reading Endorsed Student graduates are again partnering with local agencies to provide a free literacy workshop for Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteers who help guide their mentees in reading.

After a successful workshop at JU last April with about 80 mentors attending, Dr. Tammy Ryan, JU Assistant Professor of Reading Education, said the school is working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida to hold the workshop from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Kinne University Center.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida, Communities In Schools, Take Stock In Children and United Way’s Achievers for Life work are partnering mentoring agencies that work with the Mayor’s Mentors.

“This is important work several agencies are accomplishing to bring attention to the importance of K-12 reading in our community,” Ryan said.

The workshop is designed to impart valuable knowledge to help Bigs In School mentors. Titled “BIGS’ Roundtable: How to Make a Big Impact on Reading,” it will offer tips on effective techniques to conduct K-5 reading Sessions with Big Brothers Sisters mentees. It includes a review of literacy basics, followed by a breakout session focusing on three literacy tools that can help mentees become better readers.
