Twenty-six Jacksonville University students from Professor Shelley Grant’s Media and Crime class recently hosted 26 students from Terry Parker High School and Arlington Middle School for a campus tour and lunch.
The event is the culmination of a service learning project that involves Prof. Grant’s students and Communities in Schools (CIS) Jacksonville, an organization that works directly inside classrooms to empower students to succeed. CIS had a 97 percent success rate in 2017-18 in leading their senior students to graduation.
Media and Crime, taught every fall semester by Prof. Grant, emphasizes the impact of media on the perception of crime and the U.S. criminal justice system. The course focuses on juvenile offenders and at-risk youth.
Prof. Grant’s students are paired with students from Arlington Middle and Terry Parker High schools in a semester-long service learning project. 
Students from the community spend hours each semester with their JU mentors. 
Mentors share stories about their University experience and provide support and encouragement to their mentees. 
Prof. Grant’s students have been involved in this service learning project for more than 7 years. 
Provost Christine Sapienza welcomed the mentees to campus and discussed the importance of service learning projects. 
Mentors joined their mentees for a campus tour. 
Mentors shared information about topics including classes, extracurricular activities and working on campus.
