Folio Weekly: JU researcher Gerry Pinto, others oppose removing manatees from endangered species list

Count Jacksonville University research scientist Gerry Pinto among the marine experts who oppose “down-listing” manatees from endangered to threatened species as a result of the manatee population increasing in recent years.

“Pinto said it wouldn’t be prudent to down-list the manatee at this time because of increasing watercraft deaths and habitat threats,” Folio Weekly reported this week in its cover story, “Struggling for Their Lives.”

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, endangered species are at the brink of extinction and receive full protections provided by the Federal Endangered Species Act, while threatened species are likely to be at the brink of extinction in the near future.
