Child auditions to be held Jan. 26 for JU production of “Street Scene”

JU Assistant Professor of Voice Kimberly Beasley (Director of Little Women, Fall 2011) is holding auditions for children for the Spring 2013 production Street Scene: an American Opera by Kurt Weill.

She needs three boys and four girls between the ages of 7 -10.  Auditions are 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan.26, in Phillips Fine Arts.  JU MFA candidate Suzanne Saltmarsh (LaVilla and Hendricks Elementary) is the choreographer for the show and will choreograph the children as well.

Professor Beasley will listen to the children sing something and have them read a few lines in her studio (Phillips 216) and Suzanne will dance them in Fine Arts Hall.  Singing, dancing and acting required.

This production runs April 5, 6 and 7, and rehearsals vary according to the role.  Two boys and two girls are featured throughout the show, while one boy and two girls are only in Act II.

From the College of Fine Arts 2012-13 Events Calendar:

Based on the play by Elmer Rice with lyrics by Langston Hughes and music by Kurt Weill, “Street Scene” embodies themes of love, loss, and survival in this emotional, moving story about families living in a multi-ethnic tenement in New York City in 1946. Directed by Kimberly Beasley, Street Scene will feature talented JU singers and actors. The beautiful and lively score full of classical and jazz idioms will be played by the Jacksonville University Orchestra conducted by Marguerite Richardson.

Please email Professor Beasley at kbeasle@ju.edu with any questions you may have.
