Aviation students aid OCEARCH in search for sharks in Nova Scotia

Students from the Jacksonville University School of Aviation used drones to help OCEARCH find sharks during the research group’s most recent expedition to Nova Scotia.

Led by Assistant Professor of Aviation Ross Stephenson and Assistant Professor of Biology and Marine Science Bryan Franks, undergraduate Aviation students Megan Birtalan and Marcus Shields joined graduate Marine Science student Jackson Hooten to help OCEARCH locate great white sharks by locating their food source, the seals, and associated predation zones.

The video below describes how the Collaborate JU project “OCEARCH Support with Unmanned Aircraft Systems” aided the overall expedition.
