North Florida School of Special Education is a happy place that means to improve the lives of students, ages 5-22, with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities through the achievement of academic, vocational, and social skill. NFSSE has enjoyed a great partnership with Jacksonville University through student volunteers with Adaptive PE and Education majors. If you have not heard about this great little school, I encourage you to visit the website and read some of the wonderful things they do in the classroom, on the farm, and in the kitchen (not to mention see beautiful pictures of the students and grounds). The Walking Tree is an annual 1-mile walk/run that the school does to raise money to cover operation costs. After raising MORE money than the $20,000 goal last year, they raised our goal this year to $25,000. We appreciate any amount of donation that you feel you can contribute in this economy, but we don’t have much time. The Walking Tree event on April 13. That’s a long way to go in just a little time! This money is important for therapy programs, curriculum, and the introduction of new enrichment programs for the kids. North Florida School also relies on community financial support for the PE, art, and computer classes that give the students a completely enriched learning experience. We will put a “shoe” up at the school with your name on it to share with those who visit us and let them know that you personally support our school, students and not to mention our purpose!
The Elementary classes have started an online donations page that can be forwarded to anyone that you think may be interested in supporting this fantastic little school. If you feel moved to walk and meet some of the smiling faces you see on the websites, we would LOVE to have you walk with us on Saturday, April 13 … and registration is free! I have a form I can get to you if you are interested in doing the walk. As an added bonus, a $35 donation (made by you or collected by you) will get you a nice T-shirt to wear the day of the event.
