JU Orchestra to present concert of romantic masterworks April 23

The Jacksonville University Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Marguerite Richardson, will present its final concert of the 2012-2013 academic year at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 in Terry Concert Hall.

The orchestra is comprised of JU students and faculty, as well as musicians from the Jacksonville community. The featured soloist on the program is JU Associate Professor of Piano Dr. Scott Watkins in a performance of Franz Liszt’s brilliant Second Piano Concerto in A major.

“This concerto is full of Romantic sweep and drama,” Watkins says.

The concert will also feature a performance of the noble Brahms Symphony No. 1 in c minor. Johannes Brahms composed this symphony in a span of 21 years, from the time he was 22 years old until the first performance, when he was 43. Sometimes referred to as “Beethoven’s Tenth,” this work demonstrates both the Romantic genius of Brahms and his reverence to classical traditions.

This concert is offered free and open to the public.
