“Titanic” and “Star Wars” music at First Coast Wind Ensemble’s Free Family Concert April 22

The JU College of Fine Arts presents the First Coast Wind Ensemble in concert this Sunday, April 22 at 3 p.m. in Terry Concert Hall. The concert is free to the public. 

This annual Family Concert features music that appeals to listeners of all ages. The program, titled “Sea and Sky,” includes several works that explore this theme. Thom Ritter George’s First Suite in F, written for the 50th anniversary of the United Navy Band, pays tribute to the Navy experience. Selections from James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster film Titanic commemorates the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the luxury passenger liner on April 15, 1912. Other selections include Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and The Padstow Lifeboat

The concert also includes music by well-known film composer John Williams, including a suite of popular themes from the Star Wars saga and a medley of music from Catch Me If You Can and Swing, Swing, Swing

The concert will also feature the winner of the FCWE 2012 Concerto Competition for High School Musicians, flutist Leighbra Wilkinson. Leighbra is a senior at Manatee School for the Arts in Palmetto, Florida. She will perform Briccialdi’s The Carnival of Venice with the First Coast Wind Ensemble and will receive a $1,000.00 cash award as the 2012 concerto winner for the state of Florida.

The 60-member First Coast Wind Ensemble is an organization of community musicians and JU students led by JU faculty members Artie Clifton and Don Reynolds. This is the group’s 22nd season of free concerts offered as a cultural service to the Jacksonville community. 

The First Coast Wind Ensemble has released two recent albums to wide acclaim, “A Christmas Celebration” and “Symphonic Spirit,” and a DVD titled “Sounds of the First Coast.” The group is a member of the Cultural Council of Jacksonville.  More information is available at www.fcwe.org.
