Mayo’s Dr. Edith Perez, Donna Deegan honored Tuesday, March 26, at JU Women’s History Month Luncheon

What: Jacksonville University 15th Annual Women’s History Month Luncheon. Keynote speakers are Dr. Edith Perez, Deputy Director, Mayo Clinic Cancer Center; and Donna Deegan, well-known journalist, three-time breast cancer survivor and founder of the 26.2 with Donna marathon that raises breast cancer research money.

Theme: “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.”

2013 Honorees: JU Community Women of the Year: Dr. Edith Perez and Donna Deegan; JU Woman of the Year: Dr. Lois Becker; and Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne Award to the JU Women’s History Month Student of the Year: Tayler Massey.

Details: This annual event honors women in the Jacksonville community who have exemplified themselves through outstanding service and accomplishment.

Biographies of Perez and Deegan are below.

“In keeping with the national theme of women’s history month to honor women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, we selected Donna Deegan and Dr. Perez, who have done so much to raise awareness of and battle breast cancer,” said event co-organizer Carole Barnett, a JU professor of humanities. “The event is also so inspiring to our students, to see women in our local area who’ve accomplished so much and empowered us.”

BIOGRAPHIES:

Dr. Edith A. Perez:

Edith A. Perez, MD, is the Deputy Director, Mayo Clinic Cancer Center in Florida, director of the Breast Program, and the Serene M. and Frances C. Durling Professor of Medicine at Mayo Medical School. She is a cancer specialist and internationally known translational researcher at Mayo Clinic. Her roles extend nationally, including chairing the Breast Committee for the North Central Cancer Treatment Group, as well as other positions within the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Perez has authored more than 555 research articles in journals, books and abstracts. She is a recipient of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s Research Grant Award (1998-2010); the Horizon Achievement Award in Cancer Research (2002); the North Florida Hispanic of the Year Award (2003); the Mayo Clinic Outstanding Faculty Award (2002 & 2004); the Mayo Clinic Distinguished Educator Award (2003); the named Serene M. and Frances C. Durling Professorship of Medicine (2006); and more other honors and awards.

Donna Deegan:

Donna Deegan is a well-known journalist, philanthropist and marathoner. A three-time breast cancer survivor, she is founder and president of The Donna Foundation, which funds the critical needs of underserved women with breast cancer. She is also founder of the 26.2 with Donna, the nation’s only marathon distance race dedicated solely to breast cancer research and care. She is the author of “Through Rose Colored Glasses” and “The Good Fight,” whose sales help support breast cancer research and care.
