JU’s Madeline Shaffer breaks out ukulele, wins paid gig! (UPDATED WITH INFO ON HER UPCOMING PERFORMANCE)

JU dance and art major Madeline Shaffer

Less than two years after teaching herself to play the ukulele, Jacksonville University junior art and dance major Madeline Shaffer has managed to earn herself a paid performance gig.

Shaffer, of Murphysboro, Ill., won the June open mic competition at threeLayers Café in Jacksonville’s Springfield area. She performed “My Girl,” “Sunday Morning” and “One and Only” to win the contest.

“I have played in the JU talent show. Other than that, I only play at Three Layers’ open mic nights and in my room,” she quipped.

Shaffer’s paid threeLayers’ performance is from 8 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 30.

Meanwhile, here Shaffer playing and singing a ditty, “Hanging by a Thread,” from her YouTube channel:
