JU sailing team finishes second at Old South Regatta

JU head sailing coach Jon Faudree/Donald dela Torre, JU

The Jacksonville University sailing team continues to surprise the competition, finishing second at the University of Florida’s Old South Regatta on Feb. 23. The JU team competed against six schools from throughout the South and as far away as Indiana.

Saturday was a great day to sail with the high near 80 and shifty winds between 12-20 knots. Sophomore Roy Ingham and senior Dan Moore started the regatta with two first-place finishes in A-Division, ultimately finishing second for the regatta. Freshman Alex Steo skippered with freshman Matt Martin for the first four races in B-Division before switching in sophomore crew Karolina Dzieniszewski as the wind became lighter in the afternoon. Steo posted incredibly consistent results in very demanding conditions. The three combined to also finish second in their division.

The team led right up to the end of the regatta; this was a huge improvement over just two weeks ago. JU topped teams like Florida, USF and Clemson — teams that they had lost to in the previous regatt. Click here for complete results.

Only two regattas into the spring season and the team is looking really good. As we continue to practice and gel together, we will hopefully continue to post top results.

This weekend the team is at Rollins College for the South Points 2 Regatta.
