Attention to controversial City Council member enhanced by media technology, JU prof Stephen Baker tells Times-Union

Jacksonville University professor Dr. Stephen Baker

Social media and other means of widespread, instantaneous communication tend to bring increased attention to controversial politicians, Jacksonville University political science professor Stephen Baker said in a Feb. 11 Florida Times-Union profile of Jacksonville City Council member Don Redman.

The Times-Union reported that Redman is polarizing, particularly due to his admitted combativeness pertaining to his staunchly conservative views.

Baker said the enhanced attention to Redman’s divisiveness may further hinder Redman’s concensus-building ability.

“They really do put a microscope on members and really accentuate what would have been eccentricities,” Baker said of social media, video and other communications technology.
