Assistant JU Professor of Sculpture Jim Benedict’s 3-D Art Foundations classes exhibited more than a dozen inflatable sculptures on the Science Green behind the Howard Administration Building on Monday, March 11. A 25-foot-tall lighthouse and an 18-foot-long walking and barking wiener dog were just a few of the works on display. Students from the class were encouraged to interact with their projects and many crawled inside their sculptures to bring them to life, while others invited the audience to get a hands-on experience with their creations.

The large-scale sculptures are fabricated from thermally bonded plastic sheets, similar to thick trash bags. Students learn strategies to turn a two-dimensional drawings or concepts into a three-dimensional object. The work explores art in public spaces and scale. S

“Seeing the audience engage with their finished projects is an important component to understanding the role of art outside the studio,” Benedict said.
