Varsity Shooting team Runner-Up at JAX Southeast Collegiate Invitational

The Varsity Shooting team recently co-hosted its sixth Jax Southeast Collegiate Invitational (Regional) Championship Shoot, with the squad coming in as runner-up Main Event Champion among 124 collegiate athletes from nine universities.

The performance follows the team grabbing HOA (High Overall) National titles in Handicap Trap and Trap Doubles at the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National Championships (www.shootsctp.org) this past July in Ohio, as well as Runner-Up in Sporting Clays, Third in Trap and Fourth in Skeet.sctp shooting skeet logo

JU, SCTP and JAX Clay Target Sports hosted the invitational Oct. 21-23, and it is one of the largest collegiate regional shoots in the country.

Bethel University took the HOA Championship Team honors in Saturday’s Main Event, with JU second. JU, coached by David Dobson, is a nine-time ACUI and SCTP National Event Champion across all divisions. Rounding out the field for third, fourth and fifth on Saturday were Virginia Tech University, Stetson University and Florida State University. Eastern Kentucky University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the University of North Florida and the University of Delaware filled out the balance of the collegiate field. varsity shooting3On Sunday, Bethel edged out JU by one target in the Sporting Clays event, followed by Virginia Tech, FSU and EKU. All schools competed in American Skeet, American Trap & International Wobble Trap on Saturday and Sporting Clays on Sunday.

JU Shooting Team members and Jax Gun Club members volunteered to referee and pull targets.

The tournament is made possible with funds from the Scholastic Clay Target Program (www.shootsctp.org), funded by the Midway USA Foundation (www.midwayusafoundation.org). The shoot is hosted by JU and the SCTP and is held every fall and spring at JAX Clay Target Sports, with the next shoot March 10-12 of next year.
