Traffic alert: Lane closures on University Boulevard

Jacksonville University employees and students may need to allocate more time for their commute to and from campus in the coming weeks.

A contractor (Callaway Contracting) working for the Jacksonville Electric Authority will be required to close two lanes of traffic and a turn lane on University Boulevard to complete a water main installation across University Boulevard at Commerce Street in the Arlington area. This work is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Feb. 4 through Feb. 18. No weekend work is planned at this time. Dates and times are subject to change.

The construction will be split into two separate phases. The contractor will close the southbound travel lanes and turn lane on University to install the pipe half way across the street. Once this work is completed, the contractor will then close the northbound travel lanes and turn lane to complete the pipe crossing. Commuters will be able to travel both north and southbound at all times using one traffic lane. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will be present to assist with traffic control.

This work is part of JEA’s Total Water Management Plan project, which involves building a pipeline to transfer water from the west side of the St. Johns River to the east side of the river through the Arlington area and ending near Southside Boulevard and Bradley Road.
