T-U and Financial News & Daily Record: JU’s Gilmore, other basketball legends to assist with NBA festivities in Jacksonville

JU's Artis Gilmore, special assistant to the president

Jacksonville University basketball legend Artis Gilmore is helping lead the community’s hosting of a National Basketball Association preseason game and associated events, the Florida Times-Union and Financial News & Daily Record reported in its Friday, Oct. 4, editions.

As part of the “NBA in Jax” festivities, Gilmore, JU’s special assistant to the president, will join other former NBA players Rick Barry, George Gervin, Christian Laettner and David Thompson in visiting students at Butler and Northwestern middle schools and Edward Waters College on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

“The intent is to tell them (the students) to be prepared. There are extraordinary challenges ahead of them and now is the time to prepare,” Gilmore, who also serves as the city’s sports, entertainment and physical fitness ambassador, told the Financial News & Daily record.

The former players also will meet fans at the game between the Orlando Magic and New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at Veterans Memorial Arena.
