Student Profile: Kenneth Smith D.D.S.

Meet Dr. Kenneth Smith, who is enrolled in the JU Brooks Rehabilitation College of Healthcare Sciences School of Orthodontics’ Advanced Specialty Education Program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

Please describe your educational background including your undergraduate and graduate degrees.
I have Bachelor of Science in Biology from California Lutheran University and a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Southern California.

Why did you choose the JU School of Orthodontics?
I chose Jacksonville University for three reasons: location, clinical experience, and duration. First, Jacksonville was a very attractive location for a southern California native. The ability to move from the west coast to the east coast was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Second, the clinical experience at JU is priceless. From the prestigious faculty to the constant patient interaction, I find myself learning hands on everyday. Third, there are not many programs in the country that offer a two-year program and I am looking forward to beginning my career.

What do you like best about the program?
The clinical experience and two-year duration of the program are the best qualities. The heavy clinical experience and close interaction with several faculty members is unlike that of any other school in the nation. Everyday I feel challenged and supported as I learn to create treatment plans and execute orthodontic techniques. Although the education is intensive and extremely demanding, it feels invaluable as I prepare to start my own practice after graduation.

What made you choose to pursue a career in orthodontics?
The decision to become an Orthodontist was natural. I enjoy the patient-doctor relationship and the opportunity to be an engineer that can create a custom smile for each patient. As an orthodontist I have the ability to both mentally and physically help a person of any age. Utilizing my brain to predict biomechanical movements and dexterity to create desired outcomes is both challenging and rewarding. Enabling my patients to become more confident is very gratifying and keeps me humble knowing that they will be positively changed for the rest of their lives. Most importantly because it is fun!

What do you hope to pursue after graduation?
After graduation my goal is to seek out opportunities to buy or partner into an Orthodontic practice in Central/Southern California.
