When: 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

Where: Jacksonville University, 2800 University Blvd. N., Jacksonville, FL 32211.

Event details: To honor local veterans and raise awareness and funding for JU student veterans, the JU Student Veterans of America chapter is holding the second annual “Show Your Colors 5K Run.” In a fun twist to conventional races, the hundreds of expected participants will be doused from head to toe with different colors at each kilometer. Veterans and non-veterans alike are invited to take part as participants or spectators. Proceeds from the Show Your Colors 5K Run will be used to support the SVA mission for student veterans, such as operating costs for the SVA Defenders’ Den study lounge on campus, defraying costs of flight hours for Aviation student veterans and helping toward funding for a veterans’ counselor. Student veterans make up the second largest student group on campus, at nearly 350.

Race packets will be available for pickup from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, and starting at 8:30 a.m. race morning at the Defenders’ Den in the Founders Building at Jacksonville University. T-shirts for the race have a white background, so participants can look forward to having a perfect blank canvas for colors. Participants are encouraged to wear outrageous costumes and stay after the race for music, refreshments and fun.

Course: The 5K course winds its way through the beautiful JU campus and will include four color stations. It is an out-and-back design with a small loop that starts on River Road and finishes near the St. Johns River at Cost Trail across from John Sessions Baseball Stadium. Participants will run through several different color stations along the 5K route and will also be given their own packet of color to use as they see fit. The course finishes adjacent to the St. Johns River near Cost Trail for a post-race celebration.

About the Student Veterans of America

The SVA is a 501(c)(3) coalition of student veterans groups on college campuses across the globe. The Jacksonville University chapter is an affiliate of the national SVA and has won a “National Chapter of the Month” designation.

Today’s veterans face numerous obstacles in their path of attaining a college degree. These challenges range from a missing sense of camaraderie to feeling like an outsider among 18-year-old traditional students to a lack of understanding by university faculty. When coupled with the visible and invisible wounds of war, a college degree can be an elusive goal for men and women returning from military service. The SVA helps make the goal of a college education a reality by providing military veterans with the resources, support and advocacy needed to succeed in higher education and following graduation.
