Kurlas, Kampfe, Brown named to JU Davis College of Business Executive Advisory Board

Jacksonville University’s Davis College of Business has named three new members to its Executive Advisory Board, which works with the dean and staff on new programs such as the Davis business administration doctoral program, and on issues ranging from relevancy of the curriculum to employer expectations of graduates.

Henry K. Brown, chief executive of Miller Electric Co.; Matthew C. Kampfe, director of finance and business development for Kampfe Management Services; and Anthony S. Kurlas, managing director of the wealth management business for Merrill Lynch in North Florida, will begin their two-year terms on Aug. 1.

Dr. Don Capener, the Davis College of Business dean,  said he is working closely with the Executive Advisory Board chair, Incepture CEO Earnie Franklin, and Jed Davis to ensure the board represents finance, health care, entrepreneurism, economic development and construction.

“As leaders in the community, expert business planners, and mentors of hundreds of successful businesspeople, Henry, Matt, and Tony represent some of the best talent in the Jacksonville area in their respective fields. We are honored to have them join our board,” Capener said. “They will be instrumental in corporate engagement activities as we try and stay focused on what matters most — our students and their future impact on the companies and institutions they will serve.”

With 15 members, the Executive Advisory Board includes a cross-section of community leaders with long-established donor ties to JU, eight Davis College alumni and others representing the interests of specific community members such as small business owners and women business owners.

Biographies of the three new board members follow.

Henry K. Brown is chief executive of Miller Electric Co., as well as a member of its board of directors. A Jacksonville native, he attended Stetson University, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in accounting and a minor in business law. He earned his Masters of Accountancy from Stetson’s Business School and is a Certified Public Accountant. He started his career as an auditor for Deloitte, after which he worked as a financial analyst for Atlantic Marine.

Brown joined Miller in 2001 as controller, with responsibility over accounting and information systems. He was promoted to CEO in October 2012.  He leads the senior management team with a focus on strategic planning and organizational development to best position the company for long-term success.

He is involved in a variety of community and industry organizations, as a member of the Executive Committee of Stetson University’s Family Enterprise Center; Co-Chairman of NECA’s Future Leaders Task Force; a member of the Board of Directors of the CFMA Northeast Florida Chapter; a member of the Board of Directors of United Way of Northeast Florida; a member of United Way’s 2013 Campaign Cabinet; a member of the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association; a member of the JAXChamber Board of Governors; and a member of the JAXUSA Partnership Advisory Council.

Brown and his wife, Jennifer, have three daughters, Gracie, Emma and Abby.

Matthew C. Kampfe serves as director of finance and business development for Kampfe Management Services, where he is involved with the financial operation, marketing, management and community/government relations for this specialized community re-entry facility.

As a member of the leadership team, Kampfe works closely with key physician partners, insurance companies and family/guardians/conservators to ensure that coordination and outcomes are appropriately managed for all interested parties. Kampfe’s community involvement includes stints with Connect Florida (2006 – present, Statewide Chair 2012 – 2013); Jacksonville Housing Authority (mayoral appointed Commissioner, 2010 – present); Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce (Board of Governors, 2009 – 2012; IMPACTjax (2005 – present, founding member); and The Players Championship (2003 – 2012, Co-chair for Stadium Village ’11 & ’12). He was named to the “Top 40 Under 40” by the Jacksonville Business Journal for 2009.

Kampfe is a two-time Jacksonville University alumnus, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 2006 and a masters of business administration degree in 2008. He also worked in JU Admissions office.

He and his wife, Whitney, have two children.

 

Anthony S. Kurlas is managing director of the wealth management business for Merrill Lynch in North Florida, headquartered in Jacksonville. He is a native of Louisville, Ky., and graduate of Centre College. He began his career with Merrill Lynch in 1995 in Louisville as a financial advisor.

Kurlas serves on the President’s Advisory Council for Centre College in Danville, Ky., and on the executive committee of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. In the past, he has served on the boards of the LSU Opera, Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra and the MGA of the Baton Rouge Country Club, where he has held various leadership positions with each organization, including chairman of both the LSU Opera and BRSO.

He and his wife, Ginger, have three daughters, Courtney Jane, Mimi Page and Virginia Scott.
