JU Education Prof. Steven Davis offers schoolwork advice on FOX 30 Action News

Dr. Steven Davis, Associate Professor of Education at Jacksonville University, got parents and students off to a good start this week as he offered tips for doing schoolwork on FOX 30 Action News.

Davis appeared with anchor Catherine Varnum on the station’s morning program Monday, Aug. 20, giving advice for parents and their children on getting back into the groove of homework.

The most important things? Establish a solid routine and keep it all positive, he said.

“We have to work against the notion that doing homework and schoolwork is drudgery and a real pain … we have to reach them so they think it’s positive,” Davis told Varnum.

Establishing a block schedule and gradually inceasing study time also helps, as does a system of rewards, he added.

“Build in incentives. If we do a little bit of good work at home for homework, do something enjoyable for a little time and come back to the  work … a little delayed gratification will help a lot.”
