JU campus parking and traffic advisory for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3

On Saturday, Nov. 3, the BMW Car Club of America’s First Coast chapter in conjunction with the Arlington Rotary Club will be conducting STREET SURVIVAL, driver training course at JU in Parking Lot I. This is the parking lot at the bottom of the hill at Dolphin Drive and River Road. This will require closing this parking area for 24 hours beginning at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2. All vehicles must be removed from the parking lot no later than 5 p.m. Friday as the training course will utilize the entire lot.

At about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, it will be necessary to close a segment of River Road to thru traffic at the intersection of Dolphin Drive and extending north to the Sessions Baseball Stadium. This is for safety reasons due to vehicle activity taking place in association with the training. Dolphin Drive will remain open to accommodate those needing access to the residential housing on South Campus. Drivers will only be allowed to turn left at the stop sign at River Road from Dolphin Drive and proceed to the housing areas. Conversely, traffic coming from residential housing will only be allowed to turn right off of River Road onto Dolphin Drive and proceed toward Merrill Road or other parts of the campus. Traffic may be intermittently delayed on Dolphin Drive at some point during the day when the training moves to a wet service, creating a “skid-pad,” in which drivers will be instructed how to maneuver through a slid on a wet surface.

Info on the STREET SURVIVAL young driver safety course:

The course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3; the cost is $75.

The safety school aims to reduce traffic fatalities among teens and young adults. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 4,500 drivers ages 15 to 20 were involved in fatal car crashes in 2010 in the United States.

Participants are taught about their vehicles’ handling limits and how to look ahead to anticipate other motorists. Particular emphasis is made at the safety school on the perils of texting and driving, and the virtues of wearing seat belts.
