Hundreds to help Arlington on Charter Day of Service April 16

Jacksonville University, already helping lead an effort with the city to improve its surrounding community with the Renew Arlington project, will hold a major Charter Day of Service (#JUGives) April 16 in recognition of its 81st anniversary, with more than 700 students, faculty and alumni taking part in numerous outreach projects across the area.

Projects planned for the effort, in partnership with HandsOn Jacksonville, Greenscape and other local groups, include helping with prom setup for PACE Center Center for Girls, tree planting at Reddie Point, construction of a butterfly garden at Arlington Heights Elementary School, serving adults with disabilities at L’Arche Harbor House, working with special needs children at North Florida School of Special Education and distributing food for seniors and the disabled at The Worship Center.

JU photography students under the direction of Prof. Ginger Sheridan will document the day’s events as well.

“We are inviting every member of the JU community to sign up and take part in volunteer activities for this outstanding coordinated effort,” said JU President Tim Cost. “There is no shortage of fulfilling projects from which to choose.” (Listen to President Cost discuss the event on WJCT’s First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross.)

Participants are invited on that same day to the River House for a celebratory lunch, as the campus transitions from a morning of service to an afternoon and evening celebrating the conclusion of the University’s 80th year as an institution of higher learning. Highlights include an evening celebration from 8 to 11 p.m. featuring music, activities, desserts and fireworks.

“This is a tremendous day to enhance our connection to the Arlington community,” said Brigadier Gen. (Ret.) Michael Fleming, JU Chief Government, Military & Community Relations Officer. “We are providing our students, clubs, fraternities, sororities, faculty, staff and other JU organizations with a chance to do service projects on our Charter Day,”
